The Government of Ontario announced plans today to make sweeping changes to the province’s health system structure – including the formation a central agency called Ontario Health.
In addition to dissolving the province’s 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), the Ontario Health project will see the consolidation of agencies, including:
- Cancer Care Ontario
- eHealth Ontario
- Trillium Gift of Life Network
- Health Shared Services
- Health Quality Ontario; and
- HealthForce Ontario Marketing and Recruitment Agency.
The Lung Health Foundation looks forward to working with government in making Ontario Health a success when work on the transition commences this spring. It is expected that changes will be phased in gradually and without interruptions to patient services.
Our Patient-Focused Programs Breathe On
Before, during, and after these reforms take effect, the Lung Health Foundation will continue pursuing its work to make Ontario – home to 2.7 million people living with lung disease – a safer place to breathe:
- The Lung Health Info Line will continue to connect patients and caregivers with Registered Respiratory Educators for free, confidential advice and guidance about managing flare-ups, quitting smoking, improving indoor air quality and more
- Our support groups and peer programs will continue to give patients the psychosocial support vital to navigating day-to-day life with conditions like asthma, COPD, or lung cancer
- Our various research programs will continue to pursue the innovations needed to deliver the right treatments to the right patients at the right time
