Canada’s national leader in lung health is representing Canada in New York City to make lung cancer a global policy priority.
(TORONTO ON, September 22, 2025) – The Lung Health Foundation (LHF) is standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s most influential health organizations at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to elevate the milestone Lung Cancer Consensus Statement: United for a Healthier World.
Today, Dr. Jessica Moffatt, PhD in Pulmonary Medicine and Lung Health Foundation’s Vice-President of Programs & Public Affairs, is joining global leaders in lung cancer to call for unified global action to save lives through prevention, early detection, equitable access to care, and an end to the stigma attached to lung cancer.
Powerful coalition of global health leaders
Joining the Lung Health Foundation at the UNGA are representatives from the World Health Organization, OECD, International Vaccine Institute, U.S. National Institutes of Health, World Economic Forum, Columbia University, American Cancer Society, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), LUNGevity Foundation, Hellenic Cancer Federation, OncoDaily, Society for Cancer Health Equity and Quality, Merck, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Roche, and Siemens Healthineers.
Five guiding principles for global action
The Lung Cancer Consensus Statement sets out five urgent priorities:
- Expand prevention strategies to reduce incidence.
- Prioritize early diagnosis when treatment is most effective.
- Ensure equitable access to care worldwide.
- Foster partnerships and investment to accelerate progress.
- Challenge stigma to remove barriers to care and support.
“This is a turning point for global lung cancer. Given Canada’s leadership in lung cancer, the Lung Health Foundation’s voice matters in shaping international policy that can save millions of lives,” said Dr. Moffatt. “By standing side by side with global leaders, we are making it clear that lung cancer deserves urgent, coordinated action.”
The overarching ambition is for the Statement to gain recognition as a formal global declaration, driving momentum for concerted international action against the world’s leading cause of cancer deaths.
