The Lung Health Foundation is proud to announce a new joint funding partnership with the Cancer Research Society, a pan-Canadian, not-for-profit organization that funds research into all types of cancer in order to prevent, detect and treat the disease.
Through the joint funding agreement, a co-investment totalling $500,000 will soon be in the hands of a translational research project selected through the Cancer Research Society’s competitive application process. The successful project will address a key lung cancer priority, such as:
- Promoting early detection of lung cancer
- Developing more effective treatments
- Understanding the mechanisms of resistance to current treatments
The Lung Health Foundation notes that this partnership represents the largest co-funded research grant ever awarded during the Foundation’s forty years of research impact.
About lung cancer and the urgent need for research
- If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer.
- Lung cancer is Canada’s most diagnosed cancer, making up 13% of all diagnosed cancer cases. [1]
- Every year, we lose more than 20,000 Canadians to lung cancer – that’s 57 families forced to say goodbye every single day. Lung cancer accounts for around 23% of all cancer deaths. [2]
- Delays in screening, diagnosis and access to new treatments continue to hinder Canadians from getting best in class care. [3]
- Studies on cancer funding disparities have noted that the “blame culture” of lung cancer has led to the under-funding of potentially life-saving research. [4]
Greater investments in research are needed to better understand the full spectrum of lung cancer risks, prevent future cases, improve early detection opportunities, and develop more effective treatment options.
Lung cancer stigma should never hold back progress or investment.
